2/8/03 - Montgomeryshire Canal, Sunnymeade, Four Crosses 10 male Brown Hawkers 5 female Brown Hawkers seen ovipositing in water from floating lily leaves where emergent vegetation was dense. Ovipositing was lasting 10-15 minutes. The nearby males patrolled the canal corridor, skimming the surface then rising up over the canal-side hedges into adjacent fields and returning. Patrol corridors were generally up to 20 metres in length. 2 male emperors also patrolling canal corridor. One of these was within the Brown Hawkers corridor. Both the Brown Hawkers and Emperors were chasing, catching and letting go a number of floating seed heads on the wing. 30+ male Azure Damselflies with the occasional solitary female in a group of males. Some appeared clearly paired up and ready to mate. 6 male Ruddy Darter 1 female Ruddy Darter 1 probable male Common Darter 1 tandem pair of Emperor Dragonflies seen ovipositing 1 male Blue Tailed Damselfly
3/8/03 - Montgomeryshire Canal, Sunnymeade, Four Crosses 6 female Brown Hawkers ovipositing 5 male Brown Hawkers patrolling 3 male Emperor Dragonflies patrolling. They were frequently patrolling in areas where Brown Hawkers were doing the same, but there was little aggression between the species. Where aggression was shown the Brown Hawkers were dominant. At least two pairs of Azure Damselflies in mating wheels 1 male Blue Tailed Damselfly 3 pairs of Ruddy Darter seen in tandem pairs, the tandem often turning into a mating wheel. Aggressive competitive males often perched near tandem pairs and tried to attack the tandem males. One tandem pair that was attacked in this way descended into thicker vegetation to avoid the aggresor. The agitated tandem males were seen to flick the attached female up and down when other males got too close. Tandem pairs often broke and re-formed. In the early evening both male and female Brown Hawkers were largely resting in the canal-side trees. One Brown Hawker was repetitively chased off by a butterfly as it approached while patrolling the towpath.
