Azure Damselfly (Coenagrion Puella)

The Azure damselfly can be seen from mid May to the end of August. The male has a black and blue-striped thorax and a largely blue abdomen with black bands. The female is usually light green with a black abdomen and green stripes on the thorax. There is also a blue form of the female which has more black on the abdomen than the male. This damselfly can be easily mistaken for the Common Blue or Variable damselflies without close inspection. It breeds in a very wide variety of habitats including streams, rivers, ponds, pools, lakes, canals and bog pools. It is commonly seen in domestic garden ponds. The species is distributed across most of the British Isles with the exception of the Scottish highlands.
