The Beautiful Demoiselle can be seen between the end of May and early September. It breeds at shallow stream and river locations, but can also be found near ponds and canals. Along with the Banded Demoiselle it is the largest of the British damselflies. The body of the male is a metallic blue and the wings have dark black-brown bands. The female body is metallic green with brownish wings. The species has a predominantly western UK distribution, the majority being located in the south-west, Wales, Cumbria, the western highlands of Scotland and Ireland.
