Black Darter (Sympetrum danae)

The Black Darter can be seen between mid July and October. The male has a black abdomen with a brownish-black upper thorax and black eyes. The female has a yellow abdomen and yellow-striped thorax sides with dark brown eyes. This species breeds in boggy pools, old peat cuttings, peaty ponds and lakes where there is abundant vegetation on heaths and moors. Its distribution concentrates in the west of England, Wales and Scotland although it has been recorded other areas. It is most scarce in the south-east and north-east of England and southern Ireland.
