Broad-bodied Chaser (Libellula depressa)

The Broad-bodied chaser can be seen from mid May to early August. The male has a distinctive broad blue tapering abdomen with yellow-spotted  sides and dark brown eyes. The female has an even broader tapering abdomen which is coloured honey brown with yellow-spotted sides and blackeyes. Both sexes have brown patches at the base of the wings. This species breeds in ponds, lakes, canals and ditches where there is rich marginal and surface vegetation. The distribution of this species is limited to Wales and all areas of England south of the Pennines.
