Brown Hawker (Aeshna Grandis) The Brown Hawker can be seen from early July to early October. The male has brownish blue eyes and a brown abdomen with blue spots near the thorax and blue spots at the wing roots on the thorax. The males abdomen is constricted near the thoracic end. The female is wholly brown with broad yellowish stripes on the side of the thorax and yellow spots on the abdomen. Both sexes have brown wings. This hawker breeds in ponds, lakes, canals, ditches and slow-moving rivers. It is often seen at garden ponds and flies late into the Summer and early Autumn evenings. Its distribution is wholly confined to the south and east of England, eastern Wales and Ireland.
