Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum)

The Common Darter can be seen between the end of June and as late as November. The male has a narrow straight abdomen coloured orange-red with two broad yellow stripes on the side of the thorax. The upper eyes are a dark reddish-brown with a yellowish-green lower surface. The legs have thin yellow streak. The female is a dull yellow with dark brown eyes. This species breeds in ponds, lakes, pools, bog pools and slow-flowing streams and rivers. Its distribution is widespread being particularly common in England, Wales, Ireland and the north-west highlands of Scotland.
