Common Hawker (Aeshna juncea)

The Common Hawker can be seen between early July and early October. The male has blue eyes with a blue spotted black abdomen and broad yellowish blue stripes in the side of the thorax. The female has yellowish-green eyes with a yellow-spotted dark brown abdomen. Both sexes have a yellowish forewing. Males can often be seen feeding over moorland or in coniferous forestry rides. This hawker breeds in bog pools, lakes, ponds, slow-flowing upland streams and peaty fens. Its distribution is largely confined to the west and north of the British Isles and it is scarce in the south east and east of England.
