The Four-spotted chaser can be seen between late May and early August. The male has a tapering dark greenish-brown upper abdomen with yellow sides and a black tip. The eyes are dark brown. The female is brown with yellow sides and brown eyes. Both sexes have the distinctive two brown spots on each wing. This species prefers to breed at still-water locations such as bog pools, lakes, canals and ponds. This species is found throughout the British Isles except for north-east England.
