Golden-ringed Dragonfly (Cordulegaster boltonii)

The Golden-ringed dragonfly can be seen between early June and early September. The male has green eyes and a yellow-banded black abdomen with a club shaped posterior. The female has a yellow-banded black abdomen, green eyes and a yellow-banded black thorax. The abdomen is straight with only a slight thickening at the posterior end. The male has similar markings, but with more black colouring in the abdomen and a club shaped abdomen. The males eyes are green and more closely spaced. This species breeds in the western uplands and heaths in boggy pools and moderate to fast-flowing streams and rivers. Distribution is markedly western in the UK with concentrations in Cornwall, west Wales, Cumbria and western Scotland.
