Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens)

Immature Male

The Keeled skimmer can be seen between early June and early September. 

The male has a narrow tapering blue abdomen, blue upper thorax and blue eyes. The female has yellowish-green eyes with a yellow thorax and yellow abdomen. The skimmer likes to breed in boggy pools, flushes and mires on heathland and moorland. Its distribution is limited to the south coast, Cornwall, west Wales, Cumbria and the western highlands of Scotland.
