Red-eyed Damselfly (Erythromma najas)

The Red-eyed damselfly can be seen from mid May to the end of August. Males have a black abdomen with a black upper thorax, blue sides and red eyes. The female is yellowish-green with dull reddish-brown eyes, a black upper thorax and abdomen. This damselfly breeds in very slow-moving shallow rivers or streams and is more commonly found at canals, ponds and lakes with lots of surface and marginal vegetation. The distribution of this species is largely limited to an area south of the Pennines in the south-east, midlands and east Wales.
