Up to 1990 there were 20 resident species recorded throughout Montgomeryshire. The Ruddy Darter and Migrant Hawker have since been added to that list making the total 22. The status of these species has not been updated on a county wide basis since 1990 and new voluntary recorders who can contribute information to the recording scheme are always welcome. Please email me if you would like to join the recording scheme.

Below you will find a quick guide to the 22 resident species which can be found in Montgomeryshire. Use the links to access detailed pages of information on each species. For each species there is a brief description of flight period, normal breeding locations, field characters and distribution in the UK followed by photographs of each sex and common behavioural poses. In addition there is a distribution map for each species which shows the vice county distribution up to 1990 (data courtesy of the Biological Records Centre and the National Biodiversity Gateway). On the distribution maps the grid is set at 10km while species data is set at a resolution of 1km.

If you can contribute photographs for those species which have no image yet please contact me on the email link given above.
