Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea)

The Southern Hawker can be seen between early July and early October. The male has blueish green eyes a bright lime green thorax and the black abdomen has a green-spotted upper surface with blue-spotted sides and a blue posterior. The abdomen of the male is constricted at the thoracic end. The female has greenish-brown eyes, a green thorax and green-spotted black abdomen. The Southern Hawker breeds in ponds, lakes, canals and ditches at low altitude. Its UK distribution is largely south of the Pennines with a few isolated examples in the highlands of Scotland and east and west of the Pennines.
