Mature female White-legged damselfly

The White-legged damselfly can be seen from late May to mid August. It breeds in shallow slow-moving streams and rivers and is also seen on canals and, less commonly, lakes. It prefers marginal locations with good vegetation. The male is pale blue with blue eyes and a greenish-blue thorax and has the distinctive broad, white and feathery hind legs. The female has a much paler creamy blue coloration. Immature specimens of both sexes can be white. The species is distributed in central southern England, east Wales and the south-west south of a line from The Wash to the Dovey Estuary.
